The Alliance for Automotive Innovation (AAI), which represents almost all major automakers in the United States, is calling for a permanent ban on Chinese vehicles in the country. John Bozzella, the group’s president, said the US market needed protection from a potential wave of Chinese imports.
“We must protect the US market from a flood of Chinese imports that pose a surveillance risk and disadvantage established manufacturers that have invested in American facilities for generations,” Bozzella said on Monday.
The AAI represents companies including General Motors, Toyota and Volkswagen. Supporters of a bipartisan Senate initiative agreed in September to postpone an accelerated vote on the measure until November.
The proposal is part of a broader debate in Washington over Chinese vehicles and their potential impact on the US automotive market. The industry group argues that restrictions are needed to address both security concerns and competitive pressure on manufacturers with longstanding investments in the United States.
