US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was not considering an attack on Iran after Tuesday’s midterm elections, despite recently suggesting that further strikes were possible. He told reporters in Washington that he believed Iran wanted a deal and that an agreement could be reached.

Trump’s remarks come as the conflict, which was begun by the United States and Israel, contributes to high petrol prices in the US. The report said the prices are unpopular with voters, putting pressure on Trump to bring the conflict to an end. What concessions he might be willing to make to Iran remains unclear.

Trump also said the United States would stop providing Israel with military aid at the end of this year. In an interview with Fox News, he said he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed months ago to end annual payments of $4 billion, arguing that Israel no longer depended on the assistance. Trump added that the US would support Israel if it needed help.

Elsewhere, Trump said a letter sent by Vice President JD Vance to Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei concerned US support for Iran, including medical supplies and other assistance. The White House had initially provided little information about the letter’s contents.
