Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN) has renewed its warning to public and private organizations, urging them to apply previously recommended safeguards for cold-chain systems as a matter of urgency. The alert covers refrigeration equipment as well as the industrial systems used to monitor and control it, following recent international findings cited by the agency.

The ACN’s priorities include removing direct internet access to administrative and control interfaces, checking that operational settings have not been altered, and confirming that alarms and notifications work properly. The measures are intended to reduce the risk of unauthorized access and help maintain safe, continuous operations.

A successful intrusion could affect both refrigeration equipment and the systems that detect problems. Attackers could change operating settings or alarm thresholds, potentially preventing faults from being reported.

The agency warns that compromised systems could interrupt refrigeration, damage products or materials in storage and make services unavailable, with possible consequences for operational continuity and people’s health. Where systems are managed through centralized platforms, an incident could affect multiple sites or facilities at once.
