Iran reported explosions involving two tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, saying they collided with mines. The reports came as oil prices rose again. Separately, a tanker off the coast of Saudi Arabia was reportedly hit by projectiles, and Iran said the United States had attacked two fishing boats near Qeshm Island, injuring one fisherman. The US had not confirmed the fishing-boat claim at the time of reporting.

Trump said on Monday that he was not considering an attack on Iran after Tuesday’s midterm elections. He also said he believed Tehran wanted an agreement and that a deal could be reached. His remarks followed earlier indications that the United States might strike again after the elections.

Vice President JD Vance also said there were prospects for an agreement. The report said he had sent a letter to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei the previous week. Trump described the letter as concerning assistance to Iran, including medical supplies, but the White House had initially provided little detail about its contents.

Iran has linked talks with the United States to seven conditions, while its foreign minister said there was no need for a meeting. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said no decision had been made about another US military operation against Iran. China is sending a special envoy to Iran, and Tehran said it had a plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days.

The conflict, which the United States and Israel began against Iran, has contributed to high gasoline prices in the United States, according to the report. Those prices have become a concern for voters, adding pressure on Trump to end the conflict. What concessions he might be willing to make in a deal with Iran remains unclear.
