Political cynicism was on full display at the recent G20 summit in Atlanta, where Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov debated the appropriateness of a group photo with his European counterparts and American host Marco Rubio. This diplomatic exchange occurred simultaneously as Vladimir Putin continued his violent campaign across Ukraine.

The situation has sparked debate over whether the greater scandal is Lavrov's mere invitation or the casual interactions he shared with global leaders. During an evening reception at the Oceans Ballroom in the Georgia Aquarium, Lavrov was seen chatting and joking with the German Foreign Minister, other European colleagues, and Rubio, even as children, mothers, and soldiers face death in Ukraine.

While European officials took credit for refusing to pose for a photograph with the Russian minister, critics argue this gesture amounts to an unimpressive form of protest. A complete boycott would have sent a stronger message to Moscow. Ultimately, the event served primarily to allow the Russian side to simulate normalcy on the diplomatic stage, a predictable outcome that failed to address the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
