Confindustria President Emanuele Orsini said he and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni discussed industry, the budget bill and energy during a meeting at Palazzo Chigi. He described the exchange as frank and constructive and said he left feeling positive.

The meeting took place before Orsini attended the presentation of an agreement involving Intesa Sanpaolo, Simest, Sace and Ice to support the international expansion of businesses. He said industry accounts for 83% of the country’s welfare and called for responsibility and a long-term industrial plan for Italy and Europe.

Orsini urged the government to extend the hyper-depreciation measure’s deadline from 2028 to 2029, saying it had helped generate investment. He cited more than €8 billion in business investment against a €2 billion cost to the state. He also called for development contracts to be maintained, simplified and processed more quickly.

He said other issues raised included the payback mechanism affecting medical devices, higher material costs, and the portability of supplementary pensions, which he opposed. Orsini argued that pension funds could instead help finance investment in areas such as education and healthcare.

On emissions trading system rules, Orsini welcomed what he described as an opening and Meloni’s support at the European Council, while saying further action should come from the European Union.
