At least 18 people were killed in a Russian airstrike on Komyshuvakha, a settlement in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, according to preliminary information cited by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attack took place at a school where residents were receiving humanitarian aid. At least five people were injured, while rescue teams continued searching for additional victims.
Mykhailo Semikin, head of the regional military administration, said 27 people were considered missing. Zelenskyy accused Russia of deliberately targeting the site, arguing that Moscow knew residents who had remained in Komyshuvakha received aid there every week. He called for a strong international response.
The settlement was reportedly struck several times, with more than ten bombs dropped. One of them hit an air-raid shelter directly, Zelenskyy said. Komyshuvakha lies about 25 kilometers east of Zaporizhzhia and slightly more than a dozen kilometers from the front line.
The Zaporizhzhia region has repeatedly come under heavy Russian air attacks in recent months. A strike on the city of Zaporizhzhia in mid-October killed 23 people, including four minors, according to the report. The region has also been targeted with ballistic missiles, drones and glide bombs, which Russian aircraft release from high altitude and distance before they navigate toward their targets by satellite guidance.
