Anthropic has added its third-quarter financial figures to its IPO prospectus, offering investors a clearer view of the growth and costs behind the company that develops the Claude AI assistant.

Revenue rose from $11.6 billion to $17 billion over the three-month period, twelve times the level recorded in the same quarter a year earlier. At the same time, Anthropic posted an operating loss of $567 million, after reporting its first operating profit in the second quarter, when it earned $974 million.

The company attributed the reversal to two main factors. Anthropic spent $5 billion on short-term computing capacity after demand exceeded the capacity secured through long-term agreements. The company said this additional capacity costs significantly more than multi-year contracts.

A further $2 billion was recorded as an expense for a program under which Anthropic matches shares that employees choose to donate to charitable purposes. The company has not yet paid out cash related to this accounting item.

Excluding that expense and share-based compensation, Anthropic recorded an adjusted operating profit of $2.5 billion. Even on that basis, however, its margin declined from 19% to 15%, largely because of the cost of the additional computing capacity.
