In his final speech before what he called the most important midterm elections in American history, US President Donald Trump spoke about renovation work at Washington’s Reflecting Pool. He addressed the project at the Lincoln Memorial, with the pool behind him, the day before the vote.

Trump had an aide bring him photographs of the repairs. He showed images of a blocked drain that had been fixed, cracks in the concrete and a grassy area, saying the grass looked beautiful. He also asked whether there was a photo of the algae, describing how easily it formed.

The renovations had drawn attention in American media during the summer. The Monday event was not open to the public and was attended by a few dozen people wearing beige hats, apparently park rangers, along with other invited guests.
