Republicans have lost another Senate seat to Democrats in South Carolina, according to projections cited by NBC News and CBS News. Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Republican Darline Graham Nordone, a candidate backed by President Donald Trump.

Graham Nordone is the sister of Senator Lindsey Graham, who died in July at age 71 from complications of a vascular disease. He had been expected to run in the midterm elections. His sister, 62, had not previously been active in politics before his death and campaigned on continuing his legacy, emphasizing conservative values and her support from Trump.

The outcome ran against the Cook Political Report’s assessment, which had rated the Republican side as more likely to win. South Carolina, a state of 5.6 million people, has been governed by Republicans for decades, and Republican presidential candidates have traditionally led their Democratic rivals there.
