OpenAI is preparing a public relations campaign for after Tuesday’s midterm elections, according to Axios, as Democrats appear likely to win back the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate. The company’s chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane, told Axios that the midterms will serve as “a bit of a movie trailer” for what he expects in 2028, when he believes AI will be the central issue in the presidential election.
Lehane discussed several proposals as part of the effort to shape the AI debate. They include developing AI “speed limits,” finding ways to help people see AI as empowering in their daily lives, pushing the U.S. to take a role in developing global standards, and rebranding data centers as “AI compute campuses,” Axios reported.
Lehane described the conversation around data centers as “good and healthy.” He said communities should hold companies responsible and accountable so they truly receive a transformative benefit from such projects. The debate has already pushed Amazon and Microsoft to say they will no longer use nondisclosure agreements in negotiations with local governments, according to the report.
