OpenAI is preparing to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside the ChatGPT desktop experience, aiming to reduce confusion between the different ways users can work with the app.
The company announced the change in an email to users and said the unified experience will initially be available to selected users for feedback before a broader rollout. ChatGPT and Codex will continue to appear as separate sections in the desktop app, with Codex remaining independent from the merged Chat and Work experience.
According to OpenAI, the change will let users move from exploring an idea to asking ChatGPT to complete tasks in the same place. Users will be able to bring in files and plugins, request tasks such as building a website or creating a presentation, and review and guide the work as it progresses.
OpenAI also said that ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance pool following the transition. The company expects the change not to affect most users, although some users could reach resets more frequently depending on their usage and the model they select.
The move follows Anthropic’s decision to combine Claude’s chat and Cowork functions into a single screen in September.
