the Netherlands has nominated former central bank chief Klaas Knot for the presidency of the European Central Bank, the Dutch government announced on Wednesday. Eurozone countries have until Friday to put forward candidates, which finance ministers are expected to review at a meeting on November 9.
ECB President Christine Lagarde announced last week that she plans to leave in February, eight months before the scheduled end of her term. Her successor will be appointed by EU countries based on a recommendation from eurozone states.
Knot is considered one of the leading contenders for the post, alongside former Spanish central bank chief Pablo Hernández de Cos.
