German Vice Chancellor and SPD leader Lars Klingbeil congratulated the US Democrats on the midterm election results and urged them to work closely with Germany. Speaking at the SPD Economic Forum in Berlin, he said the outcome carried a hope that things would now change for the better, adding that both sides should make use of the opportunity.
Klingbeil said Germany should engage with the Democrats and what he described as “reasonable forces” among Republicans on ways to pursue trade without tariffs, end the war in Iran, restore energy security and protect Ukraine.
He framed those goals as a shared task for transatlantic partners and said Germany’s offer to work with the Democrats remained open.
