Iranian media reported that ships caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz overnight. The Fars news agency, citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said two tankers and a tugboat were involved. One tanker reportedly struck a mine.
In a separate report, state-aligned broadcaster Press TV cited the Revolutionary Guard as saying four tankers had hit mines and been destroyed. The ships were allegedly using a route through the strait that Iran had not approved. Tehran has demanded that vessels follow a route it has designated along its coast, and the report said Iranian attacks on ships had recently intensified along a southern route.
The reports did not include independent confirmation of the incidents. The Strait of Hormuz is a key passage for global oil and gas trade.
