German executives are becoming more optimistic about the country’s economic outlook, although most still rate the overall situation negatively and see significant hurdles for businesses. The share of leaders with a negative view of the economy fell from 77% in June to 68% in October, according to a Civey survey commissioned by Handelsblatt.

The outlook for economic growth improved more sharply. Asked whether Germany’s economy would grow or shrink over the next 12 months, 30% of executives expected growth in October, almost twice the 16% recorded in June.

Civey surveyed around 5,000 C-level executives between early June and late October about the German economy, their companies and federal politics. The results also indicate that nearly one-third now believe the federal government can implement reforms, though confidence in the government remains limited.
