Despite recent negative news affecting the sector, sentiment within the German automotive industry experienced a significant rebound in October. According to data from Munich's Ifo Institute, the business climate index for the sector surged from minus 33.2 to minus 4.1 points. This marks the strongest performance recorded since mid-2024. Notably, the sub-index measuring the current situation has turned positive for the first time in more than two years.

Expectations for the future also improved, although not as sharply as the assessment of the present conditions. Pessimism still outweighs optimism regarding future prospects, though the gap has narrowed considerably compared to previous months. Anita Wölfl, an industry expert at Ifo, cautioned against interpreting these figures as a signal that the crisis is over. She noted that the strong monthly fluctuations in the business climate point to very high uncertainty within the industry.

Wölfl suggested that the recent agreement between France and Germany on a joint automotive strategy may have contributed to the improved numbers. However, she characterized this development as only a brief respite rather than a long-term solution. While the agreement provides the industry with a certain window of time, it does not address the central challenge of catching up in the global technology race. Additionally, the results of the US midterm elections could not have influenced these findings, as the survey was conducted in October.
