Democrats’ clear majorities in both chambers of Congress after the US midterm elections are prompting President Donald Trump to seek a more conciliatory approach. He will need cooperation from lawmakers, particularly on budget matters, according to a special episode of the Trump-Watch podcast.
Political scientist Cathryn Clüver Ashbrook said Democrats’ ability to intervene in foreign policy and tariff policy would remain limited. Trump has used executive orders to pursue tariffs without Congress since taking office, and, in Ashbrook’s assessment, he would not give up that authority.
Democrats could, however, use their new majorities to draw greater attention to the economic losses caused by Trump’s policies. Ashbrook also said Republican lawmakers, both newly elected and returning, might vote against Trump following what she described as a punishment of their party, potentially serving as a check on the president.
The special episode also features Dana Heide, Handelsblatt’s US correspondent, and is hosted by Nicole Bastian. René Gorny produced the episode.
