Democrat Rebecca Bennett has defeated Republican Representative Tom Kean in New Jersey, taking a seat in a district that has switched party control in each of the previous two midterm elections, according to data from the Associated Press.
Bennett, a former helicopter pilot in the US Navy, beat Kean, who had served two terms in the House of Representatives. The district was again considered competitive.
Kean missed four months of congressional votes this year while receiving treatment for depression. He disclosed the diagnosis publicly after returning to Congress.
