Traveling over Christmas and New Year is possible even for those who book at short notice, but finding a bargain can be difficult. Anke Budde, president of the Alliance of Independent Travel Companies, says offers remain available across nearly all holiday destinations. Flexibility on hotels and departure dates can help travelers find a suitable trip.

The holiday period, along with summer vacation, is one of the most expensive times of year to travel, Budde says, as strong demand pushes prices up. One possible way to save is to adjust flight dates: departures on Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day may, in some cases, be cheaper.

However, a lower airfare does not necessarily mean a cheaper holiday overall. Some hotels require guests to arrive or leave on specific dates, or impose minimum stays, which can limit the savings from changing flights.

Prices also vary by destination. South Africa is in summer during the holiday period, one of its most popular travel seasons. Similar demand applies to parts of the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, where the European winter brings favorable weather. By contrast, accommodation at Mediterranean summer destinations may cost less in winter because demand is lower.

Cruises are also popular over Christmas and New Year, and ships often offer special holiday programs. Strong demand, staffing costs and festive activities can all be reflected in fares, Budde says, so travelers should keep expectations for a major holiday-season bargain modest.
