Apple is changing its App Store rules to make it harder for minors to access dating apps and AI companions that offer sexual or romantic content. The company outlined the policy in an announcement to developers on Monday.
Starting November 16, developers must add content descriptors so that apps’ age ratings reflect their features. All apps with dating or romantic relationship features will need an 18+ rating, even though many major dating services already limit their platforms to adults.
The rule could also affect AI companion apps, where users can create virtual friends, romantic partners and other characters. The policy covers apps offering these features, including those where companionship is only one part of a broader set of functions.
Apple’s announcement also requires apps to indicate when they share a user’s real-world location with another person or group. In Brazil, apps that provide location sharing for families may request an official rating from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security instead of using the A16 rating required under local law.
The changes follow other measures Apple has introduced to protect minors, including the global rollout of age-assurance technology and expanded parental controls and child-safety features.
