Apple has reduced how much its engineering teams can spend on AI each day, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. The reported cuts come as the company has been incorporating AI into its engineering processes.
In October, Apple lowered the daily spending cap for engineering teams from $300 to $200, Bloomberg reported. Further reductions are being considered, with some daily allowances potentially dropping to $100. Outside engineering, Apple is reportedly weighing a limit as low as $25 a day.
The reported changes follow a period in which companies encouraged employees to use AI tools extensively, often in pursuit of efficiency gains. As usage costs mounted, some companies began considering tighter controls on spending. The costs of developing and running AI systems have also raised questions about how they compare with the productivity gains the technology is expected to deliver.
TechCrunch said it had contacted Apple for comment.
